Burns wrote his lyrics as a speech given by Robert The Bruce, King of Scots, during the Scottish Independence War. Burns used a Traditional Scottish melody from “Hey Tuttie Tatie” for his song. “Hey Tuttie Tatie” melody was also used in the Classical Violin work “Scottish Fantasy” by Max Bruch.
