Liszt uses the "Dies Irae" ("Day Of Wrath") melody as his main motif to represent the Dead. "Dies Irae" is a Latin hymn sung in a Requiem Mass most likely from the 13th Century or earlier. The first known melody set to "Dies Irae" was a Gregorian Chant (1185-1265). Besides "Liszt's Totentanz", "Dies Irae" is also famous for being used in numerous Classical masterpieces, such as Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 4", "Mozart's "Requiem", Verdi's "Requiem" and more.
